Oki! Tansi! I hope that you had a great week! I was excited to see the rain 🌧. It feeds the plants 🌱 and helps them to grow! 🌷 Learning from Na'aLast Friday, teachers went on the land to learn. I went to Nose Hill Park. I met some plant friends and thought about the teachings that I had received.
Thinking about Coyote, look at who came to visit! I was practicing kakyosin: being quiet and observing. Just then, a new friend came to visit! Jock was not showing kakyosin, so we left him to his morning walk. I turned back to look at him, and he was wiping his bum! Do you think that he had eaten too many rosehips?
Can you see the birds' homes? Can you see the birds' food? What adaptations do they use to catch their food? Math ➕ ➖You kids are great! You earned 2 certificates for your work doing IXL math! Reading 📕I really liked hearing your ideas about plants today! 🌱 🌳 I hope you enjoy these books about plants! Don't forget to keep reading! 📕EpicBooks has a lot of great stories for you to enjoy! https://www.getepic.com/ Writing🖊 & art 🎨Maybe you would like to keep a journal of your discoveries. Have a great week!Love, Ms. Sara :) Oki! Tansi! Welcome to another beautiful week of family time and online learning. This week's theme will be Kakyosin: Noticing Seasonal Changes. I added another video of one of my discoveries! I hope that you will be able to go outside this week to explore your world and learn from Na'a. You can also look for 2D and 3D shapes in your home and neighbourhood. Google ClassroomSpecial Greeting ❤️👋PFS teachers miss you! We created this fun video just for you. I'd love for you to learn our special Piitoayis greeting too! Math: 2D Shapes⚽️📦In Monday's class, we talked about Todd Triangle, a 2D shape. If you had to describe Todd, what would you say? Would you say that he has 3 sides and 3 vertices (pointy parts)? I hope so! That is how I would describe him. Remember: Todd sometimes wears "costumes" where he looks a bit different. That's because when you change how long the sides are, the triangle changes too. I made some triangles out of sticks. They all have 3 sides and 3 vertices, but they all look a bit different. Can you make 2D shapes out of objects around your home? Send me a picture! Do you remember making different shapes using geoboards? Here are some pictures of our work. Notice how we have lots of different kinds of triangles. Do you remember this song from Jack Hartman? Get up, move around and count the sides and vertices along with him! Art Challenge #1: Create a picture using 2D shapes! Send me a photo of your creation. Art Challenge #2: Find the shapes in one of these pictures, then draw a 2D shape picture of your own!
Go on a shape search in your home or on a walk! Take along this sheet. Use tally marks to note what shapes you find. Send me a picture of your tally sheet!
Don't forget to practice using IXL. Try it out! You'll like it! Check your school email for your username and password. https://ca.ixl.com/ You can also download and print these worksheets for more practice.
Look Up🔝This week's GoogleClassroom lesson has some drumming. When we went walking, we heard drumming too! Who could have made this sound? Someone is singing, too! Who is singing?
Read Aloud with Andy !Just because we aren't in the school doesn't mean that we can't have reading buddies! My son Andy is in grade 5 and would like to read to you. His first book is Dino-Baseball by Lisa Wheeler. Scholastic Publishing gave permission for teachers to record their books during this time. Thank you, Scholastic Books! In this book, 2 teams of dinosaurs are playing baseball: the Green Sox (herbivores/ plant eaters) vs. the Rib-Eye Reds (carnivores/ meat eaters). You can print the page below or email me with your answers!

I hope that the change in season finds you all healthy and well. As you may know, I have been reaching out to families by phone to connect with you. It has been really nice to hear your voices and the voices of my students. If you haven't heard from me yet, please note that as I am working from home, my personal number may appear as “blocked” or “unknown”. If this happens, please answer, as this is an important step in our planning for your child. Also if your phone number has changed please contact the school so that we can update it in the system. Should you need extra help during these uncertain times, please contact the school. We can connect you with different agencies that offer a variety of supports and services. PFS teachers miss our students and continue to hold our school values in our hearts. On our last day together before the break, we went out to the river to sing our song. This link is also on our school webpage: Over the next few weeks I will be adding information, website links and photos.
Please take good care! Ms. Sara :) Oki, Tansi, Parents and Guardians, I hope that you are all well in these times of uncertainty. Please know that your child is loved and that we at PFS are thinking about and praying for the health and well-being of all of our students. To lighten your spirits, please enjoy this update of our work over the past few weeks. Literacy: Writing has many parts. "I can add finger spaces" and "I add periods at the end of sentences" were two of our learning goals. Students enjoyed acting out the punctuation as we marched to the poem "Hippopotamus". Thank goodness for doors: we had fun shouting out the last line: "Unless she's wearing roller skates!" Students also represented finger spaces and periods with pipe-cleaners and beads. Each bead represents each word. We added red beads to represent periods at the end of our "sentences". For great audio books, check out BookFlix: https://bookflix.digital.scholastic.com/home?authCtx=U.642726498 We have also been working on building our sight word core. Sight words are frequently used words that students should be able to recognize by sight. Many of these cannot be sounded out as their spelling does not match common rules. If you would like to practice sight words, this website offers great games and activities that will help your child to build their sight word core while having fun: https://sightwords.com/sight-words We have also been watching some sight word videos in class. Here are a couple that that the students have watched recently:
Math: Students have been working on using different strategies to add and subtract quickly and easily. We have been working on adding and subtracting to 20. We used Goldfish crackers, whiteboards, base 10 blocks and journals to show our work. We also continued to work on counting to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. We sang, clapped, exercised and used number tiles. Here are some popular videos that the kids enjoyed:
Land-based Learning: As the weather changed, students used their 5 senses to note changes from Winter to Spring. We also looked for evidence of animals. Students learned about how different animals adapt to the seasons: some hibernate, and some are active year-round. We began projects to show different animals in their environments. I will send out Messenger emails when updates are made.
Please have a restful Spring break, and stay healthy. Yours in kimmapiiypitsinni and learning, Ms. Sara :) Oki, Tansi, parents and guardians, A lot has been happening in room 23 since my last post! Check out what we've been up to! Bundle Opening: Students helped to prepare for the Sacred Bundle Opening by designing candy bags with PFS values. These ones represent Spirituality (Aatsimmoihkanni). For their designs, students chose what spirituality means to them. Drumming, smudge, and time on the land were themes that students showed quite often. The gifts were very appreciated! 100 Days of Kindness (Kimmapiiypitsinni): Valentine's Day was the inspiration for February's theme of Kindness (Kimmapiiypitsinni). Room 23 students drew and cut out over 100 hearts that are now being used throughout the school! Teachers are "catching students being kind" and writing their names on the hearts. These are posted in the main hallway for all to see. Students names are then entered into a draw to win a fun prize. Each room 23 student also had a chance to paint a heart on the mural with the help of our grade 5 buddy class. The mural looks beautiful and we had fun helping with it! Valentine's Day Art: Valentine's Day is a time to show others that we care about them as a friend. For our art project, students created homemade valentines for many of their classmates. They used different colours, fancy scissors and stamps to create beautiful and thoughtful pieces of art. Math: We are continuing to learn to count in grade 1 and grade 2. Students have been working on getting all the way up to 100 without looking at a chart. We count by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. The kids practice by clapping with a partner, doing exercises with the teacher, and getting active with Jack Hartman videos. The kids are getting better every day and having a lot of fun. My favourite is counting by 2s with Grandma and Grandpa on the farm. A class favourite is going on a jungle safari and counting by 10s. Check it out! Adding and Subtracting: Room 23 students are continuing to work on their math fluency (accuracy, flexibility and speed) by adding and subtracting in different ways. We set a learning goal before we begin to get focussed. The kids have been practicing with whiteboards, 10-frames, number lines, number sentences, and pictures. Literacy Room 23 students continue to work hard at reading every day! They read with their buddies, class partners, as well as their literacy teachers: Ms. Jackie and me. We have reading buddies in Ms. Andrea's grade 3 class as well as Ms. Emily's grade 5 class. This means that the grades 1 and 2s get a lot of practice and help! Our reading goals for the past couple of weeks have been: I can read sight words and I can follow along with my finger. Students have been practicing their writing skills in different ways. They learned about "juicy words" and used some of these to describe a season with the help of their grade 5 buddies. They also wrote about someone special that they love, as well as what they thought would make the best classroom pet. I'm not sure that a cow is a great choice... ;) Art and Science We are continuing to explore the theme of colour in both Science and in Art with our grade 5 buddies. This week, we talked about warm and cold colours. Inspired by the art of Ted Harrison, who painted a lot of Arctic scenes, we used chalk pastels to draw the warm and cold colours of the Northern Lights. The result? Just gorgeous! The students of room 23 sure work hard and have a lot of fun! I can't wait to see what this week brings!
Yours in kindness and learning, Ms. Sara :) Oki, Tansi, Parents and Guardians, I hope that you all had a lovely week. Students in room 23 were busy with lots of exciting activities and preparations for even more! Monday, we read more poems from the book Messages from Na'a. This is a great book written by Calgary students and Elder Saa'kokoto. Inspired by these ideas, we went outside to our Sit Spots for our own inspiration. Tuesday, we had special visitors from Calgary Pro Musica. They joined us for smudge and goal-setting. They gave a special performance just for us in our classroom. Wow! What an experience! Next, we took our maps and had the musicians find our Sit Spots. The musicians enjoyed being on the land as much as the kiddos did. Wednesday, Ms. Danica taught us about teepee stones and the importance of circles. We then did an art project where each of us drew a circle, then added designs to each others' work. The result is awesome! Did you know that red, yellow and blue are primary colours? Check out this song that we shared with our grade 5 buddies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu44JRTIxSQ That afternoon we went outside to explore our community. We drummed, sang our school song, saw a cool crow, looked at lots of animal poo, and found a new Sit Spot. It was a great afternoon! In Math, students continued to work on adding and representing addition through pictures and number sentences. It's a bit tricky, but we're getting there! In Literacy, students continue to work in centres on writing, language games, and spelling. During Guided Reading sessions, we have been working on touching each word as we read so that we read accurately. Our frog bookmarks help us with this: we jump from word to word with the frog and his eyes tell us what word our eyes should read! We have also been working on adding words to our imaginary backpacks. "Backpack words" are words that we recognize by sight: we don't have to sound them out. Our buddies in grades 3 and 5 help us with our reading. We also practice our letter stories, such as "Anna eats apples and says 'a, a, a!'" We sure are busy in room 23! Learning, fun, and laughter are always ongoing with our crew!
Take care and check our blog soon, Ms. Sara :) |
