Oki, Tansi, parents and guardians, A lot has been happening in room 23 since my last post! Check out what we've been up to! Bundle Opening: Students helped to prepare for the Sacred Bundle Opening by designing candy bags with PFS values. These ones represent Spirituality (Aatsimmoihkanni). For their designs, students chose what spirituality means to them. Drumming, smudge, and time on the land were themes that students showed quite often. The gifts were very appreciated! 100 Days of Kindness (Kimmapiiypitsinni): Valentine's Day was the inspiration for February's theme of Kindness (Kimmapiiypitsinni). Room 23 students drew and cut out over 100 hearts that are now being used throughout the school! Teachers are "catching students being kind" and writing their names on the hearts. These are posted in the main hallway for all to see. Students names are then entered into a draw to win a fun prize. Each room 23 student also had a chance to paint a heart on the mural with the help of our grade 5 buddy class. The mural looks beautiful and we had fun helping with it! Valentine's Day Art: Valentine's Day is a time to show others that we care about them as a friend. For our art project, students created homemade valentines for many of their classmates. They used different colours, fancy scissors and stamps to create beautiful and thoughtful pieces of art. Math: We are continuing to learn to count in grade 1 and grade 2. Students have been working on getting all the way up to 100 without looking at a chart. We count by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. The kids practice by clapping with a partner, doing exercises with the teacher, and getting active with Jack Hartman videos. The kids are getting better every day and having a lot of fun. My favourite is counting by 2s with Grandma and Grandpa on the farm. A class favourite is going on a jungle safari and counting by 10s. Check it out! Adding and Subtracting: Room 23 students are continuing to work on their math fluency (accuracy, flexibility and speed) by adding and subtracting in different ways. We set a learning goal before we begin to get focussed. The kids have been practicing with whiteboards, 10-frames, number lines, number sentences, and pictures. Literacy Room 23 students continue to work hard at reading every day! They read with their buddies, class partners, as well as their literacy teachers: Ms. Jackie and me. We have reading buddies in Ms. Andrea's grade 3 class as well as Ms. Emily's grade 5 class. This means that the grades 1 and 2s get a lot of practice and help! Our reading goals for the past couple of weeks have been: I can read sight words and I can follow along with my finger. Students have been practicing their writing skills in different ways. They learned about "juicy words" and used some of these to describe a season with the help of their grade 5 buddies. They also wrote about someone special that they love, as well as what they thought would make the best classroom pet. I'm not sure that a cow is a great choice... ;) Art and Science We are continuing to explore the theme of colour in both Science and in Art with our grade 5 buddies. This week, we talked about warm and cold colours. Inspired by the art of Ted Harrison, who painted a lot of Arctic scenes, we used chalk pastels to draw the warm and cold colours of the Northern Lights. The result? Just gorgeous! The students of room 23 sure work hard and have a lot of fun! I can't wait to see what this week brings!
Yours in kindness and learning, Ms. Sara :)
